If you are going to be cracking your password on something that doesn’t have a CD drive, such as a netbook, download the universal USB creator from PenDrive Linux ( Link Below ). A USB drive will not only run faster but you can also use a single USB drive for Windows XP, Vista, and 7 if you copy the needed tables to the drive. LCP (Figure A) is a user-account password recovery tool for Windows NT/2000/XP/2003. This tool can recover using a dictionary attack, brute force attack, or a hybrid dictionary/brute force attack. LCP allows you to import from a local computer, remote computer, SAM file,.LC file, LCS file, PwDump file, and Sniff file. Step 6: Enter a new password twice for your computer and apply it. Restart your PC and login to your account with the help of the new password. This part only applies with local administrator accounts and not with root or Microsoft accounts. The same method can be applied with Windows XP/Vista/8/10 as well to reset the password.

How to Use Ophcrack LiveCD

To get started, visit the Ophcrack download page. Once you're there, choose Download ophcrack LiveCD and select either the XP or Vista/7 link (use the Vista/7 one for Windows 8 and don't worry about the third 'without tables' option) to download the correct ISO image file for your operating system. This file may take some time to download.

An ISO file contains everything that should go on a disc or flash drive, all in a single file. The Ophcrack LiveCD ISO file contains SliTaz (a Linux distribution), the Ophcrack software, and other files needed to recover passwords. Don't worry about the details: the Ophcrack LiveCD is fully automatic so you need no Linux experience whatsoever.

After downloading the Ophcrack ISO, you do have one decision to make—whether to burn Ophcrack to a disc (like a CD, DVD, or BD) or to put Ophcrack on a USB drive, like a flash drive:

Ophcrack on a Disc

If the computer you're on, and the computer you forgot the password to, both have an optical drive, burning Ophcrack to a disc is probably the easiest way to go.

If you've burned ISO images before, go for it. If not, please know that burning an ISO file is very different than burning normal files. Check out How to Burn an ISO Image File to a CD, DVD, or BD for a complete tutorial.

After creating the Ophcrack disc, boot from the disc by restarting your computer with your newly created CD, DVD, or BD in the drive. Linux will load, Ophcrack will start, and the password recovery will begin.

Ophcrack on a USB Drive

If one or both the computers you're working with don't have a CD/DVD drive, then getting Ophcrack working from a USB drive, like a flash drive, is your only option.

Unfortunately, you can't just copy or expand the Ophcrack ISO to the USB drive and expect it to be bootable and work properly.

Once the Ophcrack USB drive is created, boot from the drive to get the Ophcrack process started.

Once you have Ophcrack going, either via the disc you burned or the flash drive you created, it will locate the users on your Windows system and begin cracking their passwords. The process is automatic—you don't usually need to type or click anything. When the passwords are displayed on the screen, write them down.

Remove the disc or flash drive, reset your computer, and then log on to Windows with your newly recovered password!

Once you're back into Windows, change your password to something you'll remember this time and then create a password reset disk to avoid ever having to do this again.

Important Information About Ophcrack and Antivirus Programs

Some antivirus programs unnecessarily identify one or both of two files included in Ophcrack as a Trojan or other kind of malware—samdump.dll and pwservice.exe. Both of these files are part of an open-source program called pwdump which is included with Ophcrack and is necessary for it to work.

The pwdump program is classified more or less as 'evil' since it can be used to extract passwords..which of course is exactly what you're trying to do.

So, don't worry if your antivirus program flags one of these files (as long as it's just these files). Ignore it and continue on with the process.

Having Problems Using Ophcrack?

Did you have problems running Ophcrack or did Ophcrack not find your Windows password? Try another free Windows password recovery tool or maybe even a commercial Windows password recovery tool.

Many people take a dim view of password recovery tools for ethical reasons — understandably so. You have a tool that can, in some cases, crack passwords on machines. But in certain situations, these tools wind up being the last ditch effort that can save you from having to go as far as reinstalling the operating system. Imagine losing your Windows Server administrator password and not having the means to retrieve it. Would you want to have to reinstall? Not on your life! In such a tricky situation, a password recovery tool may be your only recourse. Let's take a look at five 'free' password recovery tools. I say 'free' because in some cases there are tables that must be purchased (such as rainbow tables) to break some types of passwords.

1: LCP

LCP (Figure A) is a user-account password recovery tool for Windows NT/2000/XP/2003. This tool can recover using a dictionary attack, brute force attack, or a hybrid dictionary/brute force attack. LCP allows you to import from a local computer, remote computer, SAM file, .LC file, LCS file, PwDump file, and Sniff file. As with many of these applications, you should avoid using your machine while LCP recovers passwords, as it will consume the majority of your machine resources for the crack.

2: Ophcrack

Ophcrack (Figure B) is one of the most popular password recovery tools. It's free (open source as well), cross platform, and very reliable. Ophcrack uses a solid implementation of rainbow tables that just happens to have been done by those who created the method. Ophcrack runs on Windows, Linux/UNIX, and Mac. It cracks LM and NTLM hashes; has free tables for XP, Vista, and 7; includes a brute-force module for simple passwords; offers an audit mode and a CSV export; presents real-time graphs; has a LiveCD for easier (and more efficient) recovery; and dumps and loads hashes from encrypted SAM.

Ophcrack

Windows Key (Figure C) can reset your Windows password for you. This is different from the other tools, in that it doesn't recover a list of user passwords or even recover from a file. Windows Key creates a bootable CD (or USB device) you can use to boot the machine and recover the password. It's simple to use, and it can reset both local (standard version) and domain admin account (Enterprise edition only) passwords. It promises a 100% recovery rate. Although Windows Key has a free trial, you'll have to pony up for the full version (Standard $39.00 USD, Enterprise $295.00 USD) before you can really recover any passwords.

4: Windows Password Unlocker

Free Windows 7 Password Cracker

Windows Password Unlocker (Figure D) also creates a USB or CD that can then be booted to recover passwords. There are three editions of this tool: Standard ($19.95 USD), Professional ($29.95 USD), and Enterprise ($49.95 USD). The biggest difference is that only the Enterprise and Professional editions can recover passwords. (Enterprise can even recover domain admin password.) The standard version simply removes the passwords, and it doesn't support the USB flashdrive method.

5: Hash Suite

Hash Suite (Figure E) is marketed as a program designed to test the security of password hashes. It's incredibly powerful and offers high performance (one of the fastest crackers available), an easy-to-use GUI, reports and statistics, and all the features of modern crackers. It also works on large number of hashes. This is the go-to tool when you need to recover (or test) a number of password hashes. Please note: To successfully use this tool, you will need to employ a pwdump tool to gain the necessary hashes for Hash Suite to crack. Here is a list of possible pwdump tools.
